This course will be held over 5 nights – from 6pm to 9pm at our Mona Vale Workshop.
The objective and outcomes of this course is to empower and enable the student to make mitred boxes at home in the workshop in the middle of the night without waking the household or the neighbours.
This course is designed with the beginner and intermediate woodworker in mind. It is also great for woodworkers who do all their woodworking with power tools but have limited hand tool skills. The course includes covering the principles of box making, box design and wood movement.
Everything is done by hand using hand tools – there is no machinery used in this course. This box making course is about the hand plane and developing hand plane skills. In the course we will be using block planes, smoothing planes, rebate planes, plow planes and shoulder planes. Hopefully by the end of the course, the student will fall in love with the hand plane and appreciate why the hand plane is loved by so many fine woodworkers.
Other skills include, measuring and marking, hand sawing, veneer splines, homemade clamps, oils and shellac will also be covered during the course.
All materials, tools and PPE will be provided during the course. We do however encourage the students to bring their own PPE or tools if they already own some. They will be more comfortable wearing their own PPE and the instructors can help fine tune and familiarize the student with their own tools.
