At minimum: a lathe, turning chisel, drill bits, pen mandrel, bushings, and a pen kit. Our beginner starter sets include everything except the lathe and chisel.
We recommend approximately 20 thin coats for depth and protection. More coats = deeper finish and less risk of sanding through to bare timber during polishing.
Use nylon bushings (included in our finishing kit) or carefully cut the cured CA from standard bushings with a sharp knife before removing the blank from the mandrel.
This usually happens if the blank ends weren't squared properly or if you pressed too hard during assembly. Lightly sand the blank ends before assembly to remove any overhanging CA that can separate under pressure.
The Fancy Slimline kits (included in both our MT1 and MT2 starter sets) are perfect for first-timers. They turn cleanly, assemble easily, and have an attractive classic look.
