• Blackbutt (PB634): An Australian coastal eucalypt from the forests of NSW and Queensland. Pale brown heartwood with a faint pink tinge when freshly cut, and a moderately coarse, uniform grain. A friendly, good-value timber to learn on.
• Bimble Box (PB601): Also known as Poplar Box, common across inland Queensland and NSW. A firmer timber to turn, with attractive colour and figure, that sands well thanks to its short grain and takes a high polish. Dry, not waxed. 20 x 20 x 120mm.
• PNG Rosewood (PB620): A rare exotic hardwood (Pterocarpus indicus) from Southeast Asia, with a fragrant aroma and colour running from yellow through golden brown to red. Turns and sands beautifully, machines well even where the grain gets cranky, and takes any finish you put on it. Dry, not waxed. 18 x 18 x 120mm.
• Pacific Jarrah (PB636): A warm red-brown timber with a fine, straight, even grain and a rich, consistent colour. A good-value blank that suits a simple, classic pen.
• Red Gum (PB632): A classic Australian eucalypt in warm red and orange-brown tones, with paler patches and natural colour variation from blank to blank. A solid, characterful timber with plenty of warmth.
