A tool with a name on it

Henry Taylor has been making tools in Sheffield since 1834. Hamlet joined them in 2006 and is made in the same works, which is why a Hamlet tool feels like a Henry Taylor tool at a more accessible price. The Richard Raffan signature range carries the Henry Taylor name. The Glenn Lucas range is made exclusively by Hamlet, as replicas of the tools he uses daily in his production shop.

10% comes off every tool in these ranges, from 8:00am Thursday August 27 to 8:00am Monday August 31. Acorn carving is in as well. If it sits under the Henry Taylor brand on our site, the discount applies. No code, nothing to enter.

Father’s Day is Sunday September 6. Most orders reach customers within 24 hours, and anywhere in Australia inside 72 hours, so ordering during the sale leaves plenty of room before the day.

M2 and M42 high speed steel·Made in Sheffield since 1834·Ash and beech handles
Good

Hamlet

M2 high speed steel, dark stained European beech handles with solid brass ferrules. The same Sheffield manufacturing at the competitively priced end of the range. Most turners start here and stay here.

Better

Henry Taylor branded

M2 and M42 steel with premium ash handles. M42 holds an edge longer than M2. You still sharpen it, just not as often, which is worth something if you are stopping mid-bowl to go to the grinder.

Best suited to

Signature ranges

Richard Raffan and Glenn Lucas both put their names to specific grinds and profiles. Worth considering when you want a tool ground for one job rather than a general purpose one.

Henry Taylor CS54 Raffan Detail Gouge 1/2"

Richard Raffan started turning in 1970 and is one of the foremost authorities on the craft. He designed this range out of heavy section material, with close attention paid to the curved edge shapes. Thick steel does not flex, and a curved cutting edge is less prone to catching, which is what makes the tool feel controlled rather than nervous.

The detail gouge is Raffan’s own favourite for small beads and fine detail, for cutting into corners, and for cutting a foot to seat in chuck jaws.

It comes in two steels. Pick the one that suits how you turn.

M2 high speed steel

$95.40$106Save 10%

Takes the keenest edge of the two and is the quickest to bring back on the grinder. The reliable everyday choice for general detail work.

  • Premium 15" white ash handle, heavy brass ferrule
  • 6" flute, 1/2" diameter

M42 cobalt

Just added
$122.40$136Save 10%

The cobalt gives it more wear resistance and heat hardness, so it holds a working edge longer through harder, more abrasive timbers and across long sessions. It takes a little longer to regrind, which is a fair swap if you turn dense Australian species or spend serious time at the lathe.

  • Fingernail grind, HAM6 handle
  • 6" flute, 1/2" diameter
Dev note, featured product: this product has options (M2 or M42), so Add to Cart opens henry-taylor-raffan-detail-gouge in a new tab. SKU CS54 is the M2 at $106. SKU M42CS54 is the M42 at $136. Please check which version is selected when the page opens, and tell Michael.
