Henry Taylor CS54 Raffan Detail Gouge - 1/2"
Richard Raffan began woodturning in 1970 and can be described as one of the world's foremost authorities on this craft. Drawing on his vast experience, Richard has designed a range of tools which are produced from heavy section materials, with particular attention given to the curved edge shapes. The tools are safe to use because the thick material does not flex thus reducing the chance of catches. The curved cutting edges are less prone to catches and much enhance the versatility and controlled performance of the tools.
The Detail Gouge is Richard's favourite tool for cutting all small beads and fine details, cutting into corners, and cutting a foot to seat in chuck jaws.
This gouge comes in two steel options. Pick the one that suits how you turn.
M2 High Speed Steel (standard): Takes the keenest edge of the two and is the quickest to bring back on the grinder. The reliable everyday choice for general detail work.
M42 Cobalt High Speed Steel (longer edge life): The cobalt gives it more wear resistance and heat hardness, so it holds a working edge longer through harder and more abrasive timbers and across long sessions. It takes a little longer to regrind, which is a fair swap if you turn dense Australian species or spend serious time at the lathe.
