PB653 - Brown Mallee Burl Pen Blank – Distinctive Australian Burl
Brown Mallee is one of Australia's most visually striking burl timbers, harvested from the goldfields and arid inland of Western Australia where the burl forms at the base of the tree. Every blank carries its own pattern of swirls, tight figure, and natural eyes, giving each finished piece a character that can't be replicated from one blank to the next.
Because burls grow under stress, small checks (hairline cracks) are part of the nature of the timber and should be expected in most pieces. They rarely affect the turn and most makers work them into the character of the finished piece. For larger cracks, a fill of gel CA mixed with sanding dust from the same blank blends in beautifully and adds strength. For hairline cracks, thin CA wicked into the crack cures to a bond several times stronger than the wood itself, which is why we routinely recommend stabilising with thin CA before final sanding.
