648 - Fiddleback Marri
Marri is a Western Australian hardwood from the wild forests of the far South West, the only region in the world where it grows. Fiddleback figure only appears in some Marri, and these blanks are cut from pieces that carry it. The figure runs as tight ripples across the grain, and once sanded and finished it catches the light and seems to move as the pen turns in your hand.
Fiddleback grain changes direction constantly, so sharp tools and light finishing cuts give the cleanest surface and help avoid tear out. Marri also commonly carries dark gum veins, which are a natural feature of the species and should be expected in some blanks. Most makers work them into the character of the finished piece. If a gum vein feels soft or crumbly during turning, thin CA wicked into it will firm it up before final sanding.
