Woodcut Bowlsaver Original Coring System

The Bowlsaver Original is Woodcut's bowl coring system, designed and refined in New Zealand since 1995. Instead of turning the inside of a bowl into shavings, it cores out solid blanks, so one piece of timber gives you a nest of bowls.

A Morse taper fits into the tailstock of your lathe, and the unit couples to the lathe via a tool post, giving solid support and reduced vibration. It is straightforward to operate, so turners of all levels can use it, on green or seasoned wood.

What's included:
Two high strength knives (Large and Small) with welded Stellite cutters, supplied sharpened, and a Woodcut Tool Post in the size you choose (unless you choose No Tool Post). The knife combination removes bowls from 3" to 12" diameter, up to 5" deep, from inside the mother bowl. Most turners never need to replace the Stellite cutters. When the time comes, they can be honed with a diamond hone.

Choosing your tool post size:
Every lathe takes a different tool post diameter, so check your lathe manufacturer's specifications before ordering. Choose from 25.4mm (1") x 150mm, 25mm x 110mm or 30mm x 135mm. For Vicmarc lathes, the VL150 takes 25.4mm (1") and the VL175, VL200, VL240 and VL300 take 30mm. If you already have a Woodcut Tool Post to suit your lathe, choose No Tool Post.

What you'll need:
A lathe from 12" to 16" swing with 1HP and up.

Where it sits:
Best suited to lathes under 16" swing. If you run a larger lathe (16" to 25" swing, 1.5HP and up) and want to core up to 18" bowls, step up to the Bowlsaver Max4.

New to bowl coring? Our free Bowl Coring Workshop Guide (PDF) covers choosing between the Original and the Max4, tool posts, setting up the blank, the cut itself, sharpening and drying.
